Hayden Panettiere reportedly kept some of her closest friends unaware that Brian Hickerson had apparently returned to her life before her sudden death at 36, according to Page Six. The revelation has added another difficult layer to the actress’s final months, particularly because of the troubled history surrounding her relationship with Hickerson.

A source revealed that friends were largely unaware of the pair’s apparent renewed connection. According to the insider, Panettiere had not been discussing Hickerson with many people close to her, raising questions about why she chose to keep the relationship private.

The source suggested that the history between Panettiere and Hickerson could have made the situation particularly difficult for her to discuss. Their relationship had been marked by multiple allegations of domestic violence, arrests and periods of separation and reconciliation.

Panettiere and Hickerson first became romantically linked in 2018. Their relationship later became the subject of intense public scrutiny after Hickerson was arrested in May 2019 following an alleged domestic violence incident involving the actress. The case was eventually dismissed.

Hickerson was arrested again in February 2020 after another alleged dispute involving Panettiere. He was later sentenced in April 2021 to 45 days in county jail after pleading no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend. He was also ordered to complete domestic violence classes and serve probation, while a restraining order was imposed.

Panettiere subsequently spoke publicly about the alleged abuse and said she hoped sharing her experience would encourage others experiencing abusive relationships to seek help. Her account of the relationship also became a major part of her 2026 memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.

Hickerson publicly acknowledged his past abusive behaviour in May 2026 while discussing the memoir. He told that he had been arrested for abusing Panettiere and accepted that her friends could be angry with him. He also discussed a disturbing incident involving a threat to throw a phone at the actress, which he said he had hoped would be excluded from the book.

Despite their history, Panettiere and Hickerson were seen together again in public. The pair sparked fresh reconciliation speculation after being photographed at Los Angeles International Airport in March 2026, with Hickerson accompanying Panettiere while she was using crutches. Their appearance fuelled renewed interest in the status of their relationship.

The apparent reunion was particularly striking because the former couple had officially split in July 2022. Panettiere had previously indicated that any renewed connection depended on Hickerson continuing his recovery and addressing his behaviour.

Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, in Greenville, South Carolina. Police and emergency personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive woman, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have said there were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, while the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further investigation and toxicology results.

Hickerson was reportedly present at the South Carolina apartment when Panettiere died, according to a police report cited by the Associated Press. His brother Zach was also at the location. The report stated that an autopsy found no trauma, while authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

The timing of Panettiere’s reported contact with Hickerson has inevitably drawn attention because of the couple’s complicated past. However, the available reporting does not establish that their renewed connection had any role in her death. Authorities have identified that there has been no official finding linking Hickerson to Panettiere’s death.
