Dan Perlman’s new comedy brings Maria Bamford, Gary Gulman and more together

Dan Perlman wraps his feature directorial debut, a coming-of-age comedy starring Maria Bamford and Gary Gulman

Dan Perlman has wrapped production on his untitled coming-of-age comedy, marking the feature directorial debut of the Flatbush Misdemeanors co-creator and star.

The film recently completed its New York City shoot and stars Romo Lee and Lucas Adler as two eighth-grade students at an elite New York City prep school. The story follows the pair as they recruit a group of misfits to shut down their school one day at a time, hoping to avoid taking their final exams.

Perlman directed the comedy from his own screenplay. The project is described as a mix of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Election and is based on Perlman’s award-winning short film Cramming, although the feature introduces a new storyline.

The cast features several prominent stand-up comedians, including Maria Bamford, Gary Gulman, Jamie Lee, Sean Patton and Yamaneika Saunders. Tony Award winner Laura Benanti and Connie Shi also appear in the film.

Lucien Formichella and Charlotte Gilbert produced the coming-of-age comedy, while Charlotte Kassimir, Amer Hilal and Perlman serve as executive producers. The project was selected for The Gotham’s Project Market through Gotham Week’s Shorts to Features track and received support from Rooftop Films’ Filmmakers Fund.

Lee, known for The Kindergarten Teacher, and Adler, who appeared in the Cannes-premiering film The Plague, lead the ensemble.

Perlman previously co-created Flatbush Misdemeanors with Kevin Iso, writing and starring in the Showtime comedy series. The show earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating across its two-season run. His other credits include the shorts Practice Space and No Sex, as well as the award-winning documentary short Being Bublé.
