Barnes & Noble faces backlash over Hayden Panettiere memoir price after her sudden death as book was discounted previously

Hayden Panettiere’s memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning is at the centre of an online pricing controversy after readers noticed that Barnes & Noble currently lists the hardcover at its full $30 price, despite the book appearing in the retailer’s 50% off Book Haul promotion.
Barnes & Noble’s current listing confirms that the hardcover edition is priced at $30. The same page identifies This Is Me: A Reckoning as an instant New York Times and USA Today bestseller.
The timing has drawn particular attention because Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, aged 36, only three months after the memoir was published. Her death was confirmed by her family, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances. Reuters reported that Panettiere was found unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, and that police had said there were no signs of foul play.
The online discussion began after a Reddit post claimed that Panettiere’s memoir had been included in Barnes & Noble’s Book Haul promotion at 50% off before her death. The post also claimed that the book was subsequently being sold at full price. That claim has fuelled criticism from some readers who have questioned the timing of the pricing change.
There is, however, an important distinction between what has been verified and what remains an online allegation. Barnes & Noble’s current listing does confirm the $30 hardcover price. The retailer’s Book Haul promotion is also real, with Barnes & Noble advertising 50% off hundreds of hardcovers for a limited period.
An Instagram post captured by search results also shows This Is Me: A Reckoning being promoted as part of Barnes & Noble’s Book Haul at 50% off. The post states that the promotion ran from August 14 through September 1, although that social media material does not independently establish whether the discount was removed because of Panettiere’s death.
That distinction matters because there is currently no verified evidence that Barnes & Noble deliberately increased the memoir’s price because Panettiere died. A change from promotional pricing to the standard retail price can occur when a sale ends or when a particular title is no longer included in a promotion.
Barnes & Noble’s own listing is particularly significant because it currently displays the hardcover at $30, while its promotional language elsewhere advertises Book Haul discounts on selected hardcovers. The evidence therefore supports reporting a discrepancy between the earlier promotional price and the current listed price, but it does not establish a motive behind that change.
The memoir itself has gained renewed attention following Panettiere’s death. Published on May 19, 2026, This Is Me: A Reckoning explores the actress’s childhood career, the pressures of growing up in Hollywood, addiction, postpartum depression, motherhood, abusive relationships and the death of her younger brother Jansen.
Panettiere had also been actively promoting the book shortly before her death. Entertainment Weekly reported that she had discussed plans for a book tour and further creative projects during interviews connected to the memoir. She described the book as only part of the stories she still wanted to tell.
Her final public appearance was also connected to the memoir. According to People, Panettiere appeared at a May 26 event in Los Angeles, where she spoke about the experiences detailed in the book and the response she had received from people who connected with her story.
