Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen’s 10 Things I Hate About You musical is officially heading to Broadway in 2027, bringing a new stage adaptation of the beloved 1999 teen romantic comedy to New York.

The Broadway musical will begin preview performances on Aug. 17, 2027, exactly one year after the announcement. The production has not yet revealed its opening night, theater or cast.

Based on the 1999 film starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, the 10 Things I Hate About You musical will offer a fresh take on the familiar coming-of-age story. Dunham is adapting the musical’s book alongside Jessica Huang, while Jepsen is writing the music and lyrics with Ethan Gruska.

Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph the Broadway production, with Tom Kitt handling music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations. Mike Bosner, whose Broadway producing credits include Shucked, Cats: The Jellicle Ball and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, will produce the show.

The original 10 Things I Hate About You follows sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford. Their strict father refuses to let Bianca date until Kat, her older sister, has a boyfriend. Cameron, a new student interested in Bianca, eventually pays Patrick Verona to take Kat out, setting the central romance in motion.

The film, loosely inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, became a cult favorite and helped launch the careers of Stiles, Ledger and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Broadway adaptation is described as a rebellious musical about growing up, discovering yourself and rejecting expectations. The story will once again centre on two sisters determined to define their own identities amid teenage romance, social cliques and angst.
