Robert Downey Jr.'s new jacket sparks Doctor Strange theory for 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Robert Downey Jr. has once again sent Marvel fans searching for hidden clues after wearing a jacket featuring a mysterious "Boris" patch that could potentially connect to Doctor Strange's role in Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor, who plays Doctor Doom in the upcoming Marvel film, has previously used his wardrobe to tease details surrounding the movie. At San Diego Comic-Con, fans noticed that his jacket featured cryptic Latverian runes containing phrases connected to Doom and his motivations. 

Now, a newly shared photo shows Downey wearing another patch-covered jacket featuring playful Marvel references including "Reed's Repairs", "Rogers Roto-Rooters" and "DoomBot". However, one patch has particularly caught fans' attention because it features the name Boris. 

The timing has fuelled speculation because leaked promotional material circulating online has reportedly used "Boris" as the codename for a mysterious masked, wizard-like character who appears alongside Doctor Doom. Some fans believe the character could secretly be Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange.

The alleged promotional material reportedly depicts the figure wearing Latverian-style clothing and using a Sling Ring, further fuelling theories about a connection to Strange. Unverified reports have suggested that Strange could align himself with Doom because he believes the Avengers cannot prevent an approaching multiversal collapse.

According to the rumours, Strange could potentially agree to serve as Doom's enforcer in exchange for greater control over magic, helping Doom manipulate incursions while attempting to preserve the multiverse.

However, none of these claims have been confirmed by Marvel Studios. The leaked images have also reportedly been subjected to AI enhancement, making their authenticity and any details supposedly visible in them difficult to verify. 

The "Boris" patch therefore remains just a potential Easter egg rather than evidence that Doctor Strange will have the rumoured role. Downey's history of incorporating Avengers: Doomsday references into his clothing has nevertheless encouraged fans to scrutinise his latest appearances for clues about the film's still-secret storyline.

Benedict Cumberbatch is expected to return as Doctor Strange in the MCU's next Avengers films, although his involvement in Doomsday has been the subject of conflicting reports. Marvel has officially confirmed Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with the film scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
