Why did Black Mirror director Ally Pankiw reject HBO’s Harry Potter series?

Black Mirror director Ally Pankiw has publicly said she turned down an opportunity to direct HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series, citing concerns about the project and its connection to author J.K. Rowling.

Pankiw shared an Instagram post on August 14 that appeared to show a text exchange with her agent about the HBO series. When her agent asked whether she would consider joining the project, Pankiw responded that she was firmly against the idea.

The Canadian filmmaker captioned the post by saying it was possible to “say no to funding transphobia” and clarified that the opportunity was for directing rather than acting.

According to Deadline, Pankiw’s comments drew support from several figures in the entertainment industry. Director Kate Herron, known for Loki, Doctor Who and Sex Education, said in the comments that she had also been approached about the series twice and had declined.

Deadline reported that it contacted HBO for confirmation about whether Pankiw had been on the studio’s list of potential directors.

The controversy surrounding HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation has persisted because of Rowling’s long-standing comments and views concerning transgender people. Her position has also created tensions with stars from the original Harry Potter films, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint.

The upcoming series has attracted a high-profile cast, including Nick Frost, John Lithgow, Paapa Essiedu and Bel Powley. Some cast members have also faced criticism online over their involvement.

The new Harry Potter series is based on Rowling’s bestselling books, with Rowling serving as an executive producer alongside Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman.

The series is scheduled to premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max globally on Christmas Day.
