Kathryn Newton’s 'Just One Day' gets a second chance at Hulu

According to Deadline, the project was previously developed at Amazon under producer Patrick Moran’s PKM Productions first-look deal.

That version did not move forward, and the series is now being redeveloped at Hulu with the same writers, Sherri Cooper and Jennifer Levin.

The Just One Day series will follow Allyson Healey, played by Newton, a recent graduate whose carefully planned life changes after she meets Willem, a free-spirited travelling actor, during a European trip.

After Willem invites Allyson to leave her itinerary behind and join him in Paris, she makes an unexpected decision that leads to a transformative 24 hours filled with romance, adventure and personal discovery.

Forman’s Just One Day was published in 2013, followed by Just One Year in 2014. The second novel retells the story from Willem’s perspective, while a follow-up novella expands the series. The books have been sold in 19 territories and have sold nearly 1 million copies.

Cooper and Levin are adapting the books and will executive produce alongside Forman and Anna Mastro. Moran is also executive producing, while 20th Television serves as the studio.

Newton already has a relationship with Hulu and 20th Television through Durango, another project in development at the companies. The actress is also known for Big Little Lies, The Society and her role as Cassie Lang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The move comes as Hulu continues to develop young adult programming. For Newton, Just One Day adds another high-profile project to her upcoming slate, which also includes Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
