Kit Harington teases 'modern love triangle' in new 'A Tale of Two Cities' series

Kit Harington is getting caught in a complicated romance in the first trailer for A Tale of Two Cities, a new four-part series that puts a modern spin on Charles Dickens' classic novel.

The Game of Thrones star plays Sydney Carton, a troubled but talented lawyer whose life becomes intertwined with Lucie Manette, played by Mirren Mack, and Charles Darnay, portrayed by François Civil. The series premieres on MGM+ on September 6.

Set against the political tensions between Britain and France in 1782 London, the series follows Lucie as she discovers that her father, believed to be dead, may still be alive. As she searches for answers, she becomes caught between Carton and Darnay.

The trailer, released exclusively by PEOPLE, opens with the famous line from Dickens' novel before introducing a story filled with romance, secrets and political unrest. Carton is struggling with addiction and his own emotional turmoil while harbouring unrequited feelings for Lucie, who is increasingly drawn to Darnay.

Harington, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, described the adaptation as intense and emotionally modern while remaining connected to the spirit of Dickens' original story.

The actor also praised the show's bilingual cast and the opportunity to approach the classic love story through a contemporary lens.

While Dickens' novel is best known for its tragic love triangle set during the French Revolution, the new adaptation brings the story to an earlier period and reimagines its characters and conflicts for a modern television audience.

A Tale of Two Cities premieres on MGM+ on September 6, 2026.
