Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos reveals regret over 'Mindhunter' cancellation: Is he bringing it back?

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has reignited interest in Mindhunter by revealing that he wishes the psychological crime thriller had received a third season.

According to The Mirror US, Sarandos was asked about Netflix sequels he regretted not making when he discussed the David Fincher series, which debuted in 2017 and released its second season in 2019.

Sarandos said he wished “we got to make” a third season of Mindhunter, offering fresh encouragement to viewers who have continued to hope for the series’ return.

The show, created by Joe Penhall and led by Fincher, followed FBI agents investigating serial killers and developing criminal profiling techniques. Despite critical acclaim, its future was placed on indefinite hold in 2020.

Fincher previously explained that production costs and audience figures played a role in the decision.

He said he was “very proud” of the first two seasons but acknowledged that the series was “expensive” and “didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment”.

Sarandos also explained why the planned third season was repeatedly delayed. “We always anticipated there would be a third season, and he got very busy making a film,” he said.

He added, “And David is an unbelievably meticulous creator, so he couldn’t do two things at the same time, and he certainly didn’t want to short-change either one.”

Fincher has described the production as a major commitment, saying, “We lived there for almost three years,” while noting that Mindhunter occupied roughly six or seven months of each year.

For now, Sarandos’ comments do not confirm a Mindhunter revival, but they indicate that the series remains a notable unfinished chapter in Netflix’s history.
