‘Spider Man: Brand New Day’ cut Rosario Dawson’s cameo despite filming a scene

Rosario Dawson has revealed that her planned appearance in Spider Man: Brand New Day was removed from the finished film, despite the actor actually filming a scene for the Marvel blockbuster.

Dawson shared the surprise revelation during a fan Q&A at GalaxyCon in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she appeared alongside Vincent D’Onofrio. When asked which superhero she would most like to work with, Dawson initially joked that she could have chosen Spider Man before revealing that she had already filmed a scene for the latest Tom Holland led film.

"Well, I’m going to have to say Spider Man," Dawson said. "I even shot a scene in the new Spider Man movie, but I got cut out."

The revelation prompted a disappointed reaction from the audience. Dawson then explained that she had also told her mother about the cut, leading to an amusing exchange over the behind the scenes photographs that could no longer be shared publicly.

Dawson plays Claire Temple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing as the character in the debut season of Daredevil in 2015. Claire is a nurse who became closely connected to several of the MCU’s street level heroes and later appeared across Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders.

Her potential return in Spider Man: Brand New Day would therefore have provided another connection between Spider Man and the wider group of Marvel characters associated with Claire.

Despite losing her scene from the final film, Dawson remains enthusiastic about the possibility of Claire eventually meeting Spider Man. She pointed out that the character still exists within the same fictional universe, leaving room for another opportunity in a future Marvel project.

"Because everybody’s in it, it still means that my character is somewhere in that same universe, and I really love that," Dawson said. "So, I hope I get to be Claire again."

Dawson also has a personal connection to Spider Man that makes the missed appearance especially meaningful to her. She explained that her uncle is a comic book artist and that Spider Man was the first character he learned to draw.

She further noted a connection between a recent Spider Man comic and her own childhood, saying that a young Spider Man is shown attending PS19 in New York’s Lower East Side, the same school Dawson attended during elementary school.

The actor had apparently prepared to celebrate her involvement with behind the scenes material, including photographs connected to her family. Instead, she received an email informing her that the scene would not appear in the finished movie.

The revelation adds another unexpected detail to Spider Man: Brand New Day, which has become a major box office success. The film opened to a record breaking $360m in the US and Canada and reached $932m worldwide during its opening weekend, according to Reuters.

Variety subsequently reported that the film had passed $1.6bn worldwide, placing it among the biggest comic book movie successes.
