Could this viral Goodwill sweater story get any more unexpected?

A Michigan woman’s search for the story behind a name found inside a thrifted sweater led to an unexpected connection with the family of its former owner.

According to PEOPLE, Allee Faist, 28, purchased a beige cardigan from Goodwill while searching for a cosy sweater to wear in her chilly office. The garment appeared ordinary until she noticed the name Alice Oram written inside near the label.

Faist continued wearing the sweater for about a year before becoming curious about its previous owner. She searched Oram’s name online, adding Michigan to the search because she had purchased the sweater from a Goodwill store in Southeast Michigan.

The search quickly produced an obituary for a 90-year-old Michigan woman named Alice Oram, who died in January 2025. Faist was particularly surprised when she noticed that Oram appeared to be wearing a sweater resembling the one she had purchased.

As she read more about Oram, Faist discovered that she had been known to loved ones as the “Christmas Stocking Queen” because she made personalised stockings for family members. Oram had also worked with the Red Cross and was passionate about crafts.

In March 2026, Faist shared the discovery in a TikTok video, initially hoping to confirm whether her sweater had belonged to Oram. The post eventually received more than 720,000 views, bringing Oram’s family to Faist’s attention.

Oram’s daughter Carolyn and granddaughter Ashley contacted Faist, and the women later met for lunch. During their meeting, Faist learned more about Oram’s personality, interests and life.

The unexpected meeting transformed a simple thrift-store purchase into a meaningful connection. Faist said the experience showed her how a piece of clothing can carry a personal history and an “amazing story.”
