Questions 'House of the Dragon' season 3 finale needs to answer

The third season of House of the Dragon is heading into its finale with the Targaryen civil war still far from settled. With Rhaenyra holding King's Landing, the Greens regrouping at Tumbleton and alliances shifting across Westeros, the final episode has several major storylines to resolve.

The biggest question is what will happen at Tumbleton. Ormund Hightower has taken control of the city and is attempting to strengthen the Green cause by putting Daeron Targaryen on the throne. Corlys Velaryon is also being held captive, while the approaching Winter Wolves could force a major confrontation. Ulf the White's apparent willingness to consider Ormund's offer could further change the balance because of his dragon.

Another major mystery is whether Alicent will actually kill Aemond. After being sent to Harrenhal to assassinate her son, Alicent now has a dagger and may have found a way to poison him. But killing her own son could prove far more difficult than plotting his death, particularly with Alys Rivers close to Aemond and seemingly aware of the events unfolding around him.

The finale could also determine whether Aegon returns to the war. His reunion with Sunfyre has given the battered king new power and a potential path back into the conflict. But with Rhaenyra controlling King's Landing and the remaining Green forces concentrated elsewhere, Aegon must decide where he can safely make his next move.

Meanwhile, Mysaria's growing influence over Rhaenyra could have major consequences. After encouraging Rhaenyra to question Daemon's loyalty, Mysaria has become both a trusted confidante and a romantic partner to the queen. Their relationship could reshape who has the greatest influence over Rhaenyra as her trust in Daemon continues to weaken.

Finally, Helaena's future remains uncertain. Her visions have become increasingly significant, and her dream of riding Dreamfyre and escaping King's Landing could represent either a glimpse of what is to come or a freedom she may never achieve. Her connection to the dragon and her prophetic abilities could become particularly important as the Dance of the Dragons moves towards its next stage.

The season 3 finale airs on August 9, but it will not bring the series to an end. HBO has already confirmed a fourth and final season, meaning some of these questions may deliberately remain unanswered as the story moves towards its conclusion.
