'Lord of the Rings' stars Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd reunite

The stars of The Lord of the Rings trilogy have reunited for a dinner in Massachusetts, more than two decades after the final film in Peter Jackson's fantasy series was released.

Sean Astin, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd, who played hobbits Samwise Gamgee, Frodo Baggins, Merry and Pippin respectively, gathered at La Royal restaurant in Cambridge on Saturday, August 8.

Astin shared a photo of the four former co-stars sitting together outside the restaurant on Instagram.

Monaghan, 49, later posted another photograph from the gathering, featuring the four actors and a couple who appeared in the background of the selfie.

"Four Halflings. Three cocktails. Two desserts. ONE great night of conversation," Monaghan captioned the post. "More to come. #becurious shoutout to the couple in the back. Well played."

The four actors starred together throughout Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which concluded with The Return of the King in 2003. The films followed Frodo and his companions as they attempted to destroy the One Ring.

Wood, 45, later returned briefly as Frodo in 2012's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. He is also expected to reprise the role in Andy Serkis' upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, expected to release December 2027.

The reunion comes shortly after Astin discussed his experience following the success of the original trilogy.

He told The Guardian that the films brought significant visibility but did not immediately translate into comparable financial gains.

"I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access," Astin said. "And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy."
