UNSC condemns deadly Swat suicide attack

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Swat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), describing it as a "heinous and cowardly" assault and calling for those responsible to be brought to justice.

The statement came days after a suicide bomber struck outside Kabal Police Station in Swat on August 3, killing 17 people, including several police officers, and injuring 27 others. Police said the attacker detonated explosives at the station's main gate after being stopped from entering the premises, while Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a press statement, the Council said it condemned "in the strongest terms, the heinous and cowardly suicide terrorist attack outside a police station in Kabal, Swat District, K-P Province, Pakistan, on August 2 2026."

The statement noted that the attack, claimed by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), had resulted in "the grievous loss of at least 16 Pakistani nationals, mostly civilians, and injuries to dozens of others."

Council members expressed "their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and the people of Pakistan," while wishing "a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured."

Reaffirming their position on terrorism, the Council said that "terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security."

The members also stressed the importance of ensuring accountability, underlining "the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice."

They urged "all States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with the Government of Pakistan in this regard."
