$60b digital economy at risk without action
In a world increasingly defined by data, Pakistan stands at a pivotal crossroads. While the nation's youth bulge and entrepreneurial spirit are well-documented, the infrastructure to harness their potential in the digital age remains a glaring gap.
This was the central theme of a think tank session held at the Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) on Friday, where a stark message emerged: Pakistan must accelerate its digital transformation by adopting China's proven playbook, or risk being left behind in the global economic race.
PCJCCI Commercial Ambassador Adeel Munawar argued that Pakistan's transition from a conventional industrial economy to a technology-enabled one is no longer a luxury but a necessity for sustainable growth. "We cannot rely on traditional models to compete," he said, urging the country to establish integrated computing network hubs and modern data centres nationwide. These facilities, he explained, are not just warehouses for servers but the very bedrock upon which advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and blockchain are built, serving as critical drivers of productivity and foreign investment.
China's meteoric rise as a tech superpower offers a tangible roadmap for Pakistan. Beijing's strategic deployment of national computing hubs across regions like the Yangtze River Delta, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and the tech-centric Guizhou province has demonstrated how coordinated infrastructure can stimulate high-quality economic development. Munawar proposed replicating this framework within Pakistan's own commercial heartlands, envisioning digital clusters in Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and extending to emerging centres like Peshawar, Quetta, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Such a network would facilitate seamless data sharing, improve industrial efficiency, and strengthen digital governance across sectors.
The potential returns are staggering. Pakistan currently boasts over 60% of its population under the age of 30, representing a massive potential workforce for a digital economy. However, a significant skills gap and inadequate connectivity threaten to squander this demographic dividend. Munawar stressed that priority investments must include energy-efficient data centres, high-speed broadband, and the deployment of 5G and fibre-optic networks. "A nationwide computing network would revolutionise industrial automation, financial services, and even disaster management," he said, adding that telemedicine and e-commerce could finally reach underserved populations, creating millions of new jobs.
Ibrahim Suhail, a Lahore-based tech entrepreneur, said the frustration we face is not with the will to innovate, but with the foundational infrastructure. "We have brilliant coders, but they are handicapped by erratic connectivity and high data costs. The Chinese model shows that government-driven investment in digital corridors can de-risk private sector involvement and unlock exponential growth. In the next five years, if we don't build the roads for data, we will simply be drivers on someone else's highway," he said.
Suhail added that global supply chains have become increasingly digitised, and Pakistan's ability to integrate into the international digital marketplace hinges on its actions today. With a potential digital economy valuation estimated to reach between $60-75 billion by 2030, the window of opportunity is closing. "By leveraging the lessons from its all-weather ally, Pakistan can transform its industrial landscape, enhance its exports, and secure its place in the global digital order. The blueprint is available; the only missing piece is the resolve to implement it," he added.
