'Michael 2' production set to begin soon as Lionsgate outlines sequel plans

Lionsgate has shared a new update on Michael 2, confirming plans to begin production on the sequel to its Michael Jackson biopic later this year or in early 2027.

Speaking during the company's earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said the studio is targeting a release at the end of 2027 or during the first half of 2028 as work continues on the follow-up film.

"We have a number of sequences, particularly some big musical sequences, that were shot previously, that are almost sure to be incorporated," Fogelson said.

"We are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest, best sequel. That is what the audience is going to want and deserve after the experience we gave them the first time."

Fogelson had previously suggested there was enough material from Jackson's life to continue the story beyond the first film, stating earlier this year that there was "a massive amount of music… and life experiences separate and apart from allegations… that would fill more than a second movie on its own."

Released earlier this year, Michael starred Jaafar Jackson, the late singer's nephew, in the lead role.

The film reportedly earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic.

Despite its commercial success, Michael received mixed reviews and attracted criticism from some reviewers and commentators, who argued that the film presented a sanitised account of Jackson's life.
