James Gunn breaks silence on 'The Batman 2' and 'The Batman 3' filming rumour

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has dismissed online speculation that The Batman 2 and The Batman 3 are being filmed back-to-back, putting an end to one of the most widely discussed rumours surrounding the franchise.

Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn directly addressed claims that director Matt Reeves was secretly shooting both sequels simultaneously. When asked to confirm or deny the rumour, Gunn replied simply, “I can deny,” making it clear that the reports are inaccurate.

The speculation had gained traction on social media, with some fans suggesting the lengthy development of The Batman 2 was due to Warner Bros. planning to film two movies as a single production. While Hollywood has previously used this approach for blockbuster franchises such as The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean and Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Gunn confirmed that this is not the case for the upcoming Batman films.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman 2 is currently in production in London and will see Robert Pattinson return as Bruce Wayne. The sequel also features Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch in undisclosed roles. Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, while plot details remain tightly guarded.

Warner Bros. recently delayed the film’s release to February 18, 2028, extending the gap between the original The Batman, which debuted in March 2022, and its sequel to nearly six years. The project had previously been scheduled for release in October 2026 before being pushed to October 2027 and later to its current date to allow additional time for post-production.

Gunn’s latest comments clarify that, despite fan theories, The Batman 2 remains the sole focus of production, with no back-to-back filming plans currently in place.
