David Zaslav backs 'Superman' sequel after 'Supergirl' box office disappointment

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav has expressed confidence in DC Studios' future, praising the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, while insisting the company has no plans to alter its strategy following the disappointing box office performance of Supergirl.

Speaking during Warner Bros. Discovery’s latest earnings call, Zaslav said director and DC Studios co-chair James Gunn remains fully focused on the sequel, which is scheduled for release in 2027. He revealed that he had recently seen early images from the film and described them as "amazing," adding that Gunn is working tirelessly on the project.

The comments come after Supergirl underperformed in cinemas, earning just $126 million worldwide following its June release. The film's weak performance contributed to Warner Bros. Discovery's softer second-quarter results, but Zaslav stressed that the studio remains committed to its long-term DC strategy rather than reacting to a single setback.

The CEO also provided updates on other DC projects, confirming that filmmaker Matt Reeves continues work on the long-awaited sequel to The Batman. He added that upcoming titles including Clayface and Lanterns reinforce the strength of the studio's development pipeline.

Beyond DC, Zaslav said Warner Bros. plans to increase its theatrical output from 14 films this year to 19 releases in 2027. He highlighted major upcoming titles including a new Lord of the Rings film, Minecraft 2, and sequels to both Batman and Superman.

According to Zaslav, Warner Bros. will continue prioritising quality over release schedules, maintaining that films will only be released when they are fully ready for audiences.
