Britney Spears pushed through after Justin Timberlake's breakup text on set, director recalls

Britney Spears' Overprotected (Darkchild Remix) music video director has recalled the emotional moment the singer received a text message from then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake ending their relationship, just before filming one of the video's most memorable scenes.

Speaking on Joseph Shepherd's Hyperfixated podcast, director Chris Applebaum said Spears suddenly disappeared to her trailer during the 2002 shoot after checking her flip phone. When he later went to see if she was all right, the singer silently showed him the message, which read: "It's over." Applebaum said he immediately realised it had come from Timberlake and understood she was experiencing her first major heartbreak.

Applebaum recalled encouraging Spears to channel her emotions into the performance rather than letting the breakup define the moment. He told her that one day Timberlake would see the video and regret his decision, urging her to show him "what he was giving up". According to the director, Spears returned to the set and delivered what he considers one of the strongest performances of her career.

The account aligns with Spears' 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, in which she revealed that Timberlake ended their three-year relationship via text message. The highly publicised split later inspired intense media scrutiny, with Timberlake's Cry Me a River becoming closely associated with their breakup.

More than two decades later, Applebaum said he remains struck by Spears' resilience and professionalism under extraordinary personal circumstances. Despite the heartbreak, she completed the shoot and created a music video that remains one of the defining moments of her early career.
