HBO Max announces official ‘Gilmore Girls’ documentary featuring Lauren Graham

HBO Max is taking fans back to Stars Hollow with an official ‘Gilmore Girls’ documentary, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the beloved television series that became a global pop culture phenomenon.

Currently in production, the untitled documentary will explore the creation and lasting legacy of Gilmore Girls through the perspective of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino. According to the official synopsis, the film examines how the series exceeded expectations to become a cross-generational favourite while showcasing the creative collaboration behind its success.

The documentary will feature Lauren Graham, who portrayed Lorelai Gilmore throughout the show's seven-season run, alongside additional cast and crew members. It will also include never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, script pages and exclusive production material, giving longtime fans a rare look inside the making of the acclaimed drama.

Acclaimed filmmaker Bonni Cohen is directing the project, which is being produced by Sony Pictures Television’s This Machine in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. Executive producers include R.J. Cutler, Jane Cha Cutler, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, Mark Blatty, Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith.

Originally produced by Warner Bros. Television, Gilmore Girls premiered in 2000 on The WB and later concluded its seventh and final season on The CW in 2007. The series starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as the iconic mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kelly Bishop, Scott Patterson, Jared Padalecki, Milo Ventimiglia and several other fan-favourite cast members.

The HBO Max production marks the first authorised documentary dedicated to Gilmore Girls, arriving after an unofficial documentary project about the series was announced in 2025.
