Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka has revealed that Grand Theft Auto VI played an unexpected role in the decision to delay Danganronpa 2×2, joking that he wanted time to play Rockstar Games' upcoming title.
Danganronpa 2×2 was originally scheduled for release in 2026 before being pushed back to early 2027. While the delay initially appeared to be a standard development decision, comments made during Anime Expo 2026 offered further insight into the move.
Speaking to Crunchyroll, producer Shohei Sakakibara explained that the team required additional development time.
He also noted that another major AAA or AAAA title was due to launch during the same release window, something Spike Chunsoft wanted to avoid.
When asked directly whether he was referring to GTA 6, Kodaka responded with a laugh.
"I wouldn't have time to make the game while playing GTA 6," he said.
Although the comment was made humorously, it suggested the highly anticipated Rockstar title influenced the studio's thinking around the release schedule.
The extra development time will also allow the team to expand the game's content. According to Kodaka, Danganronpa 2×2 will feature a new alternate storyline called Slayhem, which he said is approximately 120 per cent the length of the original story.
The remake will also include a fully rebuilt 3D world, replacing the side-scrolling maps featured in previous entries in the series.
Danganronpa 2×2 was initially presented as a retelling of the original game with an expanded story mode, but the additional content suggests the project has grown beyond a straightforward remake.
