Ready Player Two sequel returns to the spotlight after years of silence

The long-awaited Ready Player Two sequel has received its biggest update in years, with writer Zak Penn confirming that the project is still moving forward.

Penn, who co-wrote 2018’s Ready Player One with author Ernest Cline, revealed that he remains involved with the sequel during an interview with The Direct. When asked about the status of Ready Player Two, Penn confirmed, “I am working on it,” offering the clearest sign yet that the Warner Bros. project remains active.

Based on Cline’s 2020 novel of the same name, Ready Player Two would continue the story of Wade Watts and his friends following the events of Steven Spielberg’s original film. The 2018 sci-fi adventure introduced audiences to the OASIS, a virtual reality world where users escaped a struggling future society.

The first movie ended with Wade and his allies gaining control of the OASIS while attempting to encourage people to reconnect with the real world. The potential sequel is expected to explore new challenges involving advanced technology, including the OASIS Neural Interface, which could further blur the line between virtual and reality.

Steven Spielberg’s involvement in the sequel has previously been confirmed, though reports indicate he is expected to produce rather than direct the film. No casting details, production schedule or release date have been announced.

Interest in a Ready Player Two adaptation began shortly after Cline’s novel was released, with early discussions taking place between the author and Warner Bros.
