Billie Eilish's Esther Greenwood transformation revealed in first look photos from 'The Bell Jar' set
Sarah Polley's upcoming adaptation of Sylvia Plath's acclaimed novel will mark Eilish’s debut in a feature film

Billie Eilish has entered a new chapter in her career with her feature film acting debut in The Bell Jar, offering fans a first look at her transformation into protagonist Esther Greenwood.
Photos shared by celebrity gossip outlet DeuxMoi on Monday, August 3, show Eilish wearing a red shirt with a checkered skirt, matching red shoes and bold red lipstick.
Her light brown hair is styled with a side part, creating a markedly different appearance from her usual public image.
Another photograph shows the singer in a teal dress over a beige underdress, with minimal styling and a natural, makeup-free look.
The images quickly drew attention online, with fans sharing their reactions to Eilish’s transformation. One Instagram user wrote, “SHE IS GORGEOUSSSSS,” while another commented, “She certainly looks the part. I'm now intrigued.”
According to Variety, Carey Mulligan has also joined the Focus Features adaptation and is expected to play Mrs Greenwood, Esther’s mother. The casting has not yet been officially announced by the studio.
The film is directed by Sarah Polley, whose previous work includes the Oscar-winning Women Talking. Connor Storrie is also reportedly joining the cast.
Based on Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel, The Bell Jar follows Esther Greenwood, a college student navigating mental health challenges while working at a magazine.
Filming began in Toronto on June 29, 2026. The adaptation is expected to be released in 2027, although an official release date has not been announced.
The project marks Eilish’s first feature film role and brings Plath’s acclaimed novel to the screen under Polley’s direction.
