‘The Wicker Man’ sequel director Justin Hardy dies weeks before film premiere

British filmmaker Justin Hardy has died at the age of 61 after suffering a heart attack, just weeks before the world premiere of Wrath of the Gods, the long awaited sequel that completes the cinematic story begun by his late father Robin Hardy's cult classic The Wicker Man. His death was confirmed by family representatives, who said he passed away on July 31.

Hardy's latest film is scheduled to make its world premiere at FRIGHTFEST in London on August 28. The project holds deep personal significance, as it was based on a long lost concept created by his father, whose 1973 horror classic The Wicker Man remains one of the most influential British folk horror films ever made.

According to publicist Ned Mansfield, Justin Hardy was determined to complete his father's vision during the final years of his life. That commitment eventually resulted in Wrath of the Gods, which serves as the concluding chapter of a trilogy that also includes The Wicker Man and the 2011 sequel The Wicker Tree.

Born in London on October 30, 1964, Hardy built an accomplished career as a director and producer, primarily focusing on history, documentary and current affairs programming. His television and film credits spanned almost five decades of productions and included the Primetime Emmy nominated The Last Dragon, the BAFTA nominated The Relief of Belsen, along with Royal Television Society award winners such as City of Vice and Trafalgar Battle Surgeon. His work earned recognition for combining factual storytelling with cinematic presentation.

In recent years, Hardy devoted much of his creative energy to preserving and expanding his father's legacy. That journey began after the new owner of the Hardy family home discovered six sacks containing Robin Hardy's forgotten personal archive in the attic. The material had remained untouched for years and included manuscripts, notes and previously unseen concepts.

Justin Hardy and his half brother Dominic Hardy documented their exploration of the archive in the 2024 documentary and companion book Children of the Wicker Man. Their research uncovered an original story idea for another film set within the world of The Wicker Man. Inspired by those discoveries, the brothers developed a new screenplay that honoured Robin Hardy's vision while creating an original story for modern audiences.

Directed by Justin Hardy and co written with Dominic Hardy, Wrath of the Gods was filmed in Shetland, returning to one of the locations connected with Robin Hardy's original concept. The film stars Francis Magee and Norwegian actress Christiane Schaldemose. The story follows grieving widow Anna, who returns to Hel Island following her husband's death, only to encounter suspicion from local residents before a series of child disappearances exposes dark secrets within the isolated community.

The brothers also dedicated the upcoming film to Justin's mother, Caroline Hardy, after documents discovered in the archive revealed she had quietly served as an uncredited executive producer on The Wicker Man. Caroline Hardy died in 1984 at the age of 51, making the new film a tribute to both parents as well as the family's remarkable contribution to British cinema.

Although Justin Hardy will not witness the premiere of the film he worked so hard to complete, Wrath of the Gods now stands as the final fulfilment of a creative vision that connected three generations of the Hardy family.
