Auqib Nabi replaces injured Jasprit Bumrah for SL Tests

India have named seamer Auqib Nabi as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, with the 29-year-old receiving his maiden call-up to the national side.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Nabi’s inclusion on Monday after Bumrah was ruled out of the tour due to an ongoing left knee issue. The premier fast bowler did not travel with the Test squad to Sri Lanka after failing to fully recover from the injury he sustained during the second ODI against England in Cardiff last month.

Bumrah’s fitness concerns have continued since the T20 World Cup, with the latest setback forcing India to look for a replacement ahead of the Test assignment.

Nabi earned his place on the back of impressive domestic performances, particularly in the Ranji Trophy. The Jammu and Kashmir pacer claimed 104 wickets over the last two seasons, including a remarkable 60 wickets in the 2025-26 campaign.

His performances played a crucial role in Jammu and Kashmir’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy title triumph, highlighting his ability to deliver consistently in first-class cricket.

The right-arm seamer was also part of the India A squad that toured Sri Lanka recently, where he impressed with six wickets in two first-class matches. His experience from that tour is expected to help him adapt quickly to the conditions during the Test series.

Nabi’s selection marks another milestone in his career after years of strong domestic performances. He now joins India’s Test setup with the opportunity to prove himself at the highest level.
