Why does Tom Holland believe Peter Parker matters so much to young fans?

Tom Holland has opened up about the responsibility he feels every time he steps into Peter Parker's suit, saying the most important part of playing Spider Man is ensuring young audiences have a hero they can genuinely admire. Speaking during the Los Angeles premiere of Spider Man: Brand New Day, the actor reflected on the lasting influence the character has had on his own life and why that legacy continues to guide his performances.

Holland discussed the significance of portraying one of the world's most recognisable superheroes. While the films are known for their action, humour and visual spectacle, Holland said his focus extends beyond entertainment because of the impact Peter Parker has on generations of children.

"For me, it is the biggest responsibility of making these movies, is making sure that young kids have someone that they can look up to," Holland told People. He clarified that the admiration should be directed towards Peter Parker rather than himself.

"I do not mean that in me, I mean that in Peter Parker," he explained. "I have looked up to him for years and years. He has been a role model to me since I was a young kid, and even since I started playing him. So it is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, and something that I think is really important."

Holland first appeared as Peter Parker in 2016 before leading his own trilogy and becoming a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His version of Spider Man has experienced defining events across multiple Marvel films, including battles alongside Earth's mightiest heroes and the emotional conclusion of Spider Man: No Way Home, where Peter sacrificed his personal relationships to protect the world.

Spider Man: Brand New Day continues that story by following Peter as he attempts to rebuild his life after the events of the previous film. The character is now in his mid twenties and is trying to reconnect with MJ, played by Zendaya, and his best friend Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, after they lost all memories of Peter Parker.

The new film also arrives during an especially successful period in Holland's career. Just weeks before the release of Spider Man: Brand New Day, he appeared alongside his wife Zendaya in The Odyssey, another major blockbuster that has enjoyed strong box office success. With both films attracting widespread attention, Holland has strengthened his position as one of Hollywood's leading stars.

Only a few years ago, Holland had publicly suggested he might step away from the Spider Man role before reaching the age of 30. Now, having celebrated that milestone and recently married Zendaya, his outlook has shifted considerably.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland expressed enthusiasm about continuing in the franchise if audiences remain interested. "I will do it for as long as they will have me. So if this movie does good, I guess we will see!"

Spider Man: Brand New Day is currently playing in theatres.
