John Legend cast as Harry Belafonte in biopic about Paul Simon's 'Graceland'

John Legend is set to portray the late Harry Belafonte in The Road Home, an upcoming biopic exploring the creation of Paul Simon's landmark 1986 album Graceland and the musicians who shaped its legacy during apartheid-era South Africa.

Directed by Oscar winner Bill Condon, the film is currently shooting in South Africa and centres on jazz legend Hugh Masekela, whose perspective anchors the story. Johnny Flynn will play Paul Simon, while Cynthia Erivo has been cast as Miriam Makeba, Thabo Rametsi as Masekela and Guy Pearce as anti-apartheid campaigner Archbishop Trevor Huddleston.

Legend described the role as deeply personal, saying Belafonte was "my friend, mentor and collaborator in the struggle for justice". He called the late entertainer "an incredible human being who lived a monumental, revolutionary life" and said it was a privilege to portray someone who inspired generations through both his artistry and activism.

Belafonte played a pivotal role in the story behind Graceland, advising Simon as the singer prepared to record with South African musicians despite the United Nations-backed cultural boycott of apartheid South Africa. Alongside producer Quincy Jones, Belafonte encouraged Simon to seek approval from the African National Congress before undertaking the controversial project. The resulting album went on to become one of the most influential records of the 1980s.

The screenplay, written by Michael Bronner from a story developed with South African author Zakes Mda, has been created in collaboration with the Hugh Masekela Foundation. Producers say the film will celebrate the courage, resilience and cultural impact of the artists whose music transcended political divisions during one of South Africa's darkest periods.
