'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' marks 10 year milestone with millions of theatre fans worldwide

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has reached a landmark moment, celebrating its 10th anniversary in London's West End while extending its reputation as the longest running modern two part play in West End history.

The award winning production marked the milestone on July 30 at the Palace Theatre, where it first opened in 2016. Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions, the stage spectacular has become one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the past decade, drawing millions of fans and introducing a new generation to live theatre.

According to the production, more than 2.5 million people have watched the play at the Palace Theatre alone. Among those attendees were more than 300,000 people experiencing live theatre for the very first time, highlighting the show's role in attracting new audiences beyond the established fan base of the Harry Potter franchise.

During its London run, the production has staged 1,762 combined performances across its two part format, accumulating more than 8,300 hours on stage. Over the past decade, 276 performers have appeared in the production, while 45 actors made their professional stage debut through the show.

Its success extends well beyond the United Kingdom. Globally, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been seen by more than 14 million people through productions in London, New York, Tokyo, the Netherlands and a North American touring production.

The play has also become one of the most decorated productions in modern theatre history. It has collected a record 60 major awards worldwide, including nine Laurence Olivier Awards, the highest number ever awarded to a play, along with six Tony Awards for its Broadway production.

Playwright Jack Thorne reflected on the anniversary by describing the journey as an unforgettable experience. He said creating Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had been "a truly wonderful experience" and added that everyone involved was delighted to celebrate a decade in the West End.

Based on an original story by J K Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, the play follows Harry Potter as an adult working at the Ministry of Magic while exploring the relationship with his son, Albus Potter. The production expanded the wizarding world beyond the original seven novels, introducing a new generation of characters while revisiting familiar faces from the beloved series.

The anniversary also marks the beginning of a new chapter for the production. The original two part version will continue at the Palace Theatre until September 20 before a newly reimagined one part edition begins performances on October 9. The streamlined format is expected to make the show more accessible to audiences while preserving its central story and celebrated theatrical effects.

Ten years after opening night, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power.
