‘Children of Blood and Bone’ trailer unveils fantasy epic with Cynthia Erivo and Idris Elba
The first trailer for Children of Blood and Bone has finally arrived, offering audiences a dramatic look at the long awaited adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel. Scheduled for release in January 2027, the film brings the acclaimed young adult story to the big screen with an ensemble cast led by Thuso Mbedu, alongside Cynthia Erivo, Damson Idris, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Lashana Lynch, Amandla Stenberg, Ayra Starr, Bukky Bakray and several other high profile performers.
Directed by Gina Prince Bythewood, who also co wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi, the film adapts the first novel in Adeyemi's acclaimed trilogy. Set in the mythical kingdom of Orïsha, the story follows Zélie Adebola, a young woman determined to restore magic after a ruthless ruler stripped it from her people. The novel became an international bestseller following its publication and has been widely praised for blending African mythology, fantasy and coming of age storytelling.
The newly released trailer introduces audiences to the emotional stakes of Zélie's journey. It opens with Lashana Lynch portraying Jumoke, Zélie's mother, encouraging her young daughter to embrace her destiny and never fear the extraordinary gift she possesses. As sweeping landscapes and vibrant communities fill the screen, the peaceful world is shattered when soldiers invade, reflecting the brutal campaign that erased magic from Orïsha.
The footage also highlights Viola Davis as Lekan, who tells an older Zélie that years of training have prepared her for the task of bringing magic back to the kingdom. Thuso Mbedu appears at the centre of the action as Zélie embraces her growing powers, while Damson Idris is introduced as Prince Inan, a royal figure whose loyalties become central to the conflict. Cynthia Erivo appears as Admiral Kaea, one of the kingdom's most formidable military leaders, with Idris Elba, Amandla Stenberg, Ayra Starr and Bukky Bakray also featured throughout the preview.
The adaptation marks another ambitious fantasy project for Hollywood, with the production leaning heavily into large scale visual effects, elaborate world building and action sequences inspired by Adeyemi's original vision. Fans of the novels have waited several years for the adaptation to move from development into production, making the first trailer one of the most anticipated reveals for fantasy audiences this year.
However, discussion surrounding the film has extended beyond the trailer itself. In recent weeks, Adeyemi publicly indicated that she has distanced herself from the adaptation despite co writing the screenplay. Through social media posts, the author stated there was a reason she would not be promoting the project and later shared what appeared to be a private text exchange involving cast member Amandla Stenberg. Neither the production team nor Stenberg publicly addressed the reported disagreement at the time.
The trailer promises an epic adventure centred on courage, sacrifice and the fight to restore a lost legacy, giving readers their clearest look yet at the world of Orïsha before the film arrives in cinemas in January 2027.
