'Black Panther 3' to make Marvel Studios history with new filming format

Ryan Coogler has confirmed that Black Panther 3 will become the first Marvel Studios film to be shot entirely on large-format celluloid, marking a production first for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The announcement was made during Marvel Studios' panel at San Diego Comic-Con, where Coogler also confirmed that David Jonsson will star as the new Black Panther. The sequel is scheduled for release on December 15 2028.

Marvel Studios has never previously produced a feature filmed entirely on large-format celluloid.

Its first four films, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor, were shot on standard 35mm photochemical film before the studio adopted a fully digital production pipeline with Iron Man 3 in 2013.

Large-format celluloid captures more image area than 35mm film, producing greater resolution and a distinctive visual style.

Coogler joins a small group of filmmakers, including Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson, who continue to use large-format film despite the industry's widespread move to digital filmmaking.

He also used the format for Sinners, which won him the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 98th Academy Awards and earned more than $370 million at the global box office.

Marvel also confirmed that Letitia Wright and Winston Duke will return as Shuri and M'Baku.

Jonsson will portray the adult T'Challa II, the son of T'Challa introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, taking on the mantle of Black Panther.
