Chris Evans says Marvel pitched his return 'at least a dozen times', here's what finally changed his mind

Chris Evans has revealed that Marvel Studios tried to convince him to return as Steve Rogers for years after Avengers: Endgame—but it took one unexpected development to finally change his mind.

Speaking on The XO Show, Evans recalled that shortly after filming Endgame wrapped in 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and producer Louis D'Esposito invited him to dinner to discuss a potential comeback.

"They were like, 'We'd love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,'" Evans said. "They showed me a pitch, and it was a great pitch. But for whatever reason, it just didn't feel right at the time."

The actor explained that he wanted to protect Captain America's legacy rather than return simply for the sake of it.

"I kind of wanted to preserve it," he said. "I just said, 'Please keep pitching.'"

According to Evans, Marvel continued to approach him with new ideas over the next several years.

"Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches," he revealed. "They were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right."

That changed when he learned Robert Downey Jr. was in talks with Marvel.

"And then I got a phone call from my team saying, 'There's a rumor. Downey's talking to Marvel,'" Evans recalled. "All of a sudden it felt right."

After hearing a new pitch from director Joe Russo, one that involved Downey's return, Evans said he finally knew the timing was right.

"It was like, 'This is it,'" he said.

While Evans didn't reveal specific plot details, he emphasized that returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was never something he would do lightly.

"It's a never say never," he said. "But certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because everyone is precious with their role in the universe. This stuff has earned its position over a long period of time. You don't want to mess with that."

The comments offer new insight into how carefully Evans weighed the decision to reprise one of Marvel's most beloved heroes, suggesting that the right story, and the right collaborators, were essential before he agreed to return.
