Joel Edgerton has shared a hilarious story about the time he signed an autograph while pretending to be fellow Australian actor Sam Worthington after a fan mistakenly believed he was the Avatar star.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly during San Diego Comic-Con, the Dark Matter actor recalled being approached by an emotional fan who was "on the verge of tears" as she asked for his autograph. Edgerton initially thought she was simply an enthusiastic admirer until she thanked him for his performance in Avatar, a film he has never appeared in.

Rather than correcting the mistake, Edgerton decided to go along with it. "I just said, 'Thank you. Thank you,'" he recalled, explaining that whenever people credit him for a film he was never in, he simply accepts the compliment. Looking back on the encounter, he joked that the fan probably realised the mix-up later, adding that she had "obviously thought I was Sam Worthington".

Edgerton's anecdote came after his Dark Matter co-star Jennifer Connelly revealed that she is frequently mistaken for Demi Moore. Connelly also laughed about being credited for films she never starred in, including one opposite Brad Pitt, despite repeatedly insisting people had the wrong actress.

The pair shared their stories while promoting the second season of Dark Matter, which premieres on Apple TV+ on August 28.
