'Black Panther 3': Everything we know so far about Marvel's next Wakandan adventure

Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Black Panther 3 is on the way, with director Ryan Coogler returning to helm the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise and British actor David Jonsson set to lead the film as the new T'Challa.

The announcement was made during Marvel's Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where studio president Kevin Feige unveiled the sequel alongside several other major Marvel projects. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 15, 2028, marking six years since Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released.

Rather than recasting Chadwick Boseman's original King T'Challa, the story will continue through the character's son, who was introduced during the mid-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In the sequel, David Jonsson will portray an older version of T'Challa II, taking up the Black Panther mantle as Wakanda enters a new era.

Ryan Coogler returns as writer and director after overseeing the first two films in the franchise. Letitia Wright is also confirmed to reprise her role as Shuri, while Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has joined the cast in a role written specifically for him, although Marvel has yet to reveal details about his character.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the film is expected to explore the coming-of-age journey of T'Challa II while continuing Wakanda's legacy following the events of Wakanda Forever. The story is likely to build on the foundations laid in the 2022 sequel, which ended with the revelation that T'Challa and Nakia had a son living in Haiti under the name Toussaint.

Production is expected to begin after Marvel completes work on its next wave of films, with Black Panther 3 forming part of the studio's expanding post-Secret Wars slate. The sequel will also be shot on 70mm film, continuing Coogler's ambition to deliver an immersive cinematic experience.

The Black Panther franchise remains one of Marvel's most successful, with the first film becoming a cultural milestone and earning seven Academy Award nominations, while Wakanda Forever paid tribute to Boseman following his death in 2020 and introduced a new generation of heroes. The third instalment now aims to honour that legacy while ushering in the future of Wakanda.
