John Cena is stepping into the driver's seat for Matchbox, the long awaited live action adaptation of Mattel's iconic die cast toy cars. Apple Original Films has officially unveiled the first trailer for the action adventure, offering audiences their first look at the high stakes story ahead of the film's October 9 release.

Directed by Sam Hargrave, best known for the Extraction films, Matchbox transforms one of Mattel's longest running toy brands into a globe trotting action spectacle. Rather than focusing on racing alone, the film centres on friendship, espionage and a worldwide crisis that forces a group of childhood friends back together.

According to the official synopsis, the story follows a group of friends who must reunite to stop an impending global disaster while rediscovering the bond they once shared. Cena stars as Sean Walker, a skilled automobile expert and apparent secret agent whose past reconnects him with his former friends under extraordinary circumstances.

The newly released trailer wastes little time introducing the action. Sean meets his old friends in a bar before the group unexpectedly loses consciousness. They later awaken aboard a cargo aircraft where Sean, suspended from the ceiling while restrained, is confronted by an armed interrogator demanding to know the location of a nuclear warhead. The sequence quickly establishes the film's blend of explosive action, comedy and globe spanning adventure.

Joining Cena is an ensemble cast featuring Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda. The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall, whose previous credits include The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill.

The project has been years in development. Reports first emerged in 2022 that Mattel Films and Skydance were developing a feature inspired by the famous toy vehicle line, which has entertained children since 1953. Unlike many adaptations that recreate toy characters directly, Matchbox instead builds an original action story inspired by the spirit of imagination associated with the brand.

Mattel executive Robbie Brenner previously described the company's vision for the project by saying that Matchbox has inspired generations of children to combine everyday experiences with imaginative adventures. She said the creative team wanted to capture that same sense of possibility on the big screen while introducing the brand to a wider audience.

The film also represents another major step in Mattel's expanding cinematic strategy following the enormous success of Barbie. Multiple projects based on Mattel properties remain in various stages of development, including adaptations of Hot Wheels, American Girl, Barney, Polly Pocket, Thomas and Friends and Uno.

Behind the scenes, the production is backed by Skydance, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger producing alongside Brenner for Mattel Films. Hargrave's experience directing large scale action sequences is expected to bring a fast paced style to the project, while the cast adds a blend of humour and dramatic weight.

The movie arrives in cinemas worldwide on October 9.
