Stephen King's ‘Carrie’ returns with chilling October premiere date

Prime Video has officially revealed when audiences can return to one of horror's most enduring stories. The streaming platform has announced that its new adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie will premiere on October 7, with all eight episodes releasing on the same day alongside a haunting new teaser trailer that offers the first extended look at the series.

The latest adaptation is written, directed and executive produced by Mike Flanagan, whose previous work on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher has established him as one of the most acclaimed creators working in modern horror television. Trevor Macy also serves as an executive producer, with Amazon MGM Studios producing the series.

According to the official synopsis, the series is described as a bold and timely reimagining of King's classic novel. It follows Carrie White, a socially isolated high school student who has spent much of her life sheltered by her controlling mother. After the sudden death of her father, Carrie is forced to navigate public high school while confronting relentless bullying, a scandal that shakes her community and the gradual emergence of mysterious telekinetic abilities.

Summer H Howell takes on the iconic role of Carrie White. The young actress is already familiar to horror fans after appearing in projects including Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky, Hunter Hunter, Time Cut and Channel Zero. She is joined by Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle and Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White.

The supporting cast also includes Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Joel Oulette as Tommy and Thalia Dudek as Emaline. Several cast members have previously collaborated with Flanagan, particularly Sloyan, who has appeared in multiple productions created by the filmmaker.

The newly released trailer leans heavily into psychological tension before gradually revealing the supernatural horror that has made Carrie one of Stephen King's defining works. While familiar moments from the novel appear throughout the footage, the series also introduces fresh settings, expanded character arcs and a contemporary atmosphere designed to resonate with modern audiences.

Stephen King's novel was first published in 1974 and became his first major literary success. The story quickly gained worldwide recognition through Brian De Palma's acclaimed 1976 film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek, which received Academy Award nominations and remains one of the most influential horror films ever made. The property later inspired a sequel in 1999, a television adaptation in 2002 and a feature film remake in 2013.

Prime Video first confirmed that the new series was in development during October 2024 before officially ordering the project in April 2025. The eight episode format allows significantly more time than previous films to explore Carrie's relationships, the impact of bullying, her troubled family life and the emotional consequences of discovering extraordinary powers.
