Christopher Nolan shared how David Bowie first turned down 'The Prestige' before saying yes to the iconic role

Christopher Nolan has revealed that the first actor to ever turn down one of his casting offers was none other than music legend David Bowie.

Speaking in a recently resurfaced interview, the Oscar-winning director recalled wanting Bowie to play inventor Nikola Tesla in his 2006 film The Prestige. Despite sending the script, Bowie initially declined the role.

"The only no I would cop to is David Bowie," Nolan said, calling the late singer and actor his "great idol."

Unwilling to give up, Nolan asked if he could meet Bowie in person. Before the meeting, he rewrote Tesla's introductory speech, brought along the updated script and personally pitched the role.

"I basically begged," Nolan admitted.

The effort paid off. Bowie changed his mind, accepted the part and went on to deliver one of the film's most memorable performances as the brilliant inventor Nikola Tesla.

Nolan said it remains the only time he has turned a casting rejection into a "yes."
