Austrian climber lauded for Broad Peak rescue

The Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) held a ceremony at its headquarters in Islamabad to honour Austrian mountaineer Lukas Woerle for his courage, selflessness and mountaineering ethics during the Broad Peak (8,047 metres) expedition in July 2023.

The ceremony was attended by Austrian Ambassador Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera, IPC Secretary Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, the director general of the Pakistan Sports Board, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, mountaineers, climbers and media representatives.

During his summit push on Broad Peak in July 2023, Woerle abandoned his summit attempt after finding Pakistani high-altitude porter Murtaza in critical condition on the summit ridge. With the assistance of American climber Dan Buonome, he rescued Murtaza and safely brought him down to Camp 3.

Addressing the ceremony, Maj Gen Irfan Arshad paid tribute to Woerle's bravery and compassion, saying his selfless act represented the true spirit of mountaineering and served as an inspiration to climbers around the world. He said such acts of humanity strengthened the longstanding friendship between Pakistan and Austria and promoted the ethical values of the international mountaineering community.

Ambassador Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera commended the Alpine Club of Pakistan for recognising an act of exceptional courage and praised Woerle for his humanitarian spirit and commitment to saving a fellow mountaineer.

As a mark of appreciation, Maj Gen Irfan Arshad presented a commemorative shield and a Certificate of Honour to Woerle in recognition of his bravery, selfless sacrifice and contribution to saving the life of a Pakistani high-altitude porter.

The ACP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible, ethical and humanitarian values in mountaineering, stating that acts of courage and compassion such as those demonstrated by Woerle continued to inspire the community.
