Molly Ringwald has responded to Ryan Gosling’s unusual emotional support companion from the set of Project Hail Mary, a mop named “Moppy Ringwald” that helped the actor through the challenges of filming the sci-fi drama.

The The Breakfast Club star addressed the viral story during an appearance on The View season finale after Gosling revealed that the mop, which was dressed with glasses and a costume, became a source of comfort while filming intense solo scenes for the space adventure movie.

“I’ve always wanted to work with Ryan Gosling, so, I guess I kind of got my chance,” Ringwald joked while reacting to the story. She added that she was “very flattered” that the production team named the emotional support mop after her.

Gosling previously explained that filming Project Hail Mary required long periods of isolation because his character, astronaut Ryland Grace, spends much of the movie alone in space. During one difficult day on set, the crew created the mop character using duct tape and materials from other sets.

“They went and built me a mop person that they called ‘Moppy Ringwald,’” Gosling said, explaining that he spent the day dancing, singing and crying with the unusual companion.

The actor credited directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for supporting the creative solution, saying they were willing to adjust plans to help him handle the emotional demands of the role.

Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, Project Hail Mary has become a major box office success, earning nearly $685 million worldwide. The film has also generated early Oscar buzz, with Gosling and Sandra Hüller considered potential awards contenders for their performances.
