Montana romance novelist charged with homicide as investigators review her books

Investigators are reviewing Montana author's homicide-themed novels after she was charged with killing motel owner

Montana author Kyle Ann Morrow, who wrote three self-published romance novels set in the state, has been charged with deliberate homicide after the fatal shooting of Spa Hot Springs Motel owner Gene Gudmundson. Investigators say they are reviewing her background, including her writing, as they look for a motive.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, the 73-year-old allegedly shot Gudmundson on July 12 at the motel in White Sulphur Springs.

Court documents say Morrow arrived shortly before 2pm and asked whether "Annie and Gene" were there. After learning Gene was on site and Annie was away, she left briefly before returning and heading towards the back offices.

The affidavit says a gunshot was heard moments later. An employee told investigators she saw Morrow leaving and heard her say, "He is a son of a bitch, I shot him," before she exited the motel. Surveillance footage allegedly showed Morrow carrying what appeared to be a small revolver.

Officers later arrested her at home, where they say they recovered a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver, matching clothing and handwritten notes that allegedly admitted to the killing.

Morrow's books have drawn attention because they include themes of homicide, firearms and suspicious deaths.

Meagher County Sheriff Jon Lopp said Morrow's novels are being reviewed as part of the investigation, but are only one element. Authorities are also examining whether her previous employment at the motel played a role.

The investigation remains ongoing.
