Chadwick Boseman brothers reveal why they are challenging widow over estate

Family says petition aims to enforce earlier court orders while seeking transparency over remaining assets and legacy

A new legal dispute has emerged over the estate of late actor Chadwick Boseman, with his brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, explaining why they have petitioned a Los Angeles court to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as administrator of the estate.

In a statement released on July 23, Derrick and Kevin said the legal action was filed on behalf of their parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, who assigned their interests in the estate to Boseman Family LLC. The family stressed that the petition is intended to bring clarity to the administration of Chadwick Boseman's estate and ensure previous court orders are properly carried out.

"Our hope is that this process brings clarity, honours the Court's orders, and ensures the responsible stewardship of Chadwick's legacy," the statement said.

The brothers filed their petition on July 17, alleging that nearly four years after an October 4, 2022 court order for final distribution, several aspects of the estate remain unresolved. According to the filing, they believe the estate has not been fully administered and that certain assets have yet to be properly distributed.

Chadwick Boseman died in August 2020 at the age of 43 following a private four year battle with colon cancer. Because he died without leaving a will, California intestacy laws govern how his estate is divided. According to the petition, Ledward is entitled to 50% of the estate, while Boseman's parents are entitled to 25%, with the remaining share distributed under the applicable legal framework.

The Boseman brothers allege that Ledward has continued to exercise unilateral control over the estate while their parents have been denied meaningful participation in decisions affecting their interests. They also claim that the probate process should already have been completed following the court's earlier distribution order.

According to the court filing, the family believes additional estate assets exist beyond those previously identified. These reportedly include royalties and residual payments, image and intellectual property rights, real property, an allegedly undisclosed bank account, and other personal property. The petition also claims that one Life Long Term Care Policy intended for Carolyn Boseman has not been distributed and that at least one bank account, an IRA and certain SAG AFTRA residual payments remain unresolved.

The brothers are asking the court to appoint private professional fiduciary and forensic accountant Jason Rubin as the new administrator of the estate in place of Ledward.

In their public statement, Derrick and Kevin emphasised that the legal filing is not intended to diminish Chadwick Boseman's legacy but to protect it. They said the family remains committed to ensuring transparency, accountability and respect throughout the legal process while preserving the actor's legacy with dignity and integrity.

The statement also noted that, because the matter is now before the court, the family intends to respect the judicial process and focus on the facts presented in the petition.

Attorneys representing Ledward had not publicly responded to the latest filing at the time the family's statement was released.

The legal proceedings represent the latest chapter in the administration of the Black Panther star's estate. Any decision regarding the allegations, the status of the remaining assets or the request to replace the estate administrator will ultimately be determined by the Los Angeles court as the probate case continues.
