'Game of Thrones' dragon flies over Glasgow to mark 2026 Commonwealth Games

Residents and visitors in Glasgow were treated to an unusual sight this week as a giant flying replica of Syrax, the dragon from House of the Dragon, soared above the city to mark the start of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The eight-metre animatronic dragon flew over landmarks including the SEC Armadillo, the OVO Hydro and the River Clyde as part of a promotional collaboration between HBO and TNT Sports, which is broadcasting the Games in the UK and Ireland.

Modelled on Syrax, the dragon ridden by Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO fantasy series, the replica was originally created for the launch of the show's third season before making its appearance in Glasgow.

Built using 3D scans from the television series, the flying model is described as the largest dragon replica of its kind.

Despite its size, it weighs just 13kg thanks to a carbon fibre and aluminium frame covered with lightweight foam and finished with hand-painted detailing.

The dragon was created by German aeronautics company Airstage. According to the project details, it took more than three months and nearly 3,000 hours to complete.

The model features 23 moving parts, including articulated wings, a moving head and tail, allowing it to closely replicate the movements seen in the television series.

Flight is achieved using impellers concealed within the dragon's legs, helping preserve its appearance while in the air.

Syrax was spotted flying above the city between 8am and 9am, with images and videos of the display quickly circulating online.
