Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton has explained why Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are keeping Sadie Sink’s character under wraps, saying the mystery is designed to enhance the audience’s experience rather than fuel speculation.

Speaking ahead of the film’s July 31 theatrical release, Cretton said preserving the secrecy surrounding Sink’s role helps protect key story moments in the latest Spider-Man installment. While rumours have linked the Stranger Things star to the role of Jean Grey, Marvel has not confirmed her character.

According to Cretton, the filmmakers are not attempting to recreate the surprise strategy used for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which famously kept Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s appearances out of official marketing. Instead, he said the focus is on delivering a more emotionally driven story centred on Peter Parker’s isolation following the events of the previous film.

The director revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day explores a more grounded chapter in Peter Parker’s life after Doctor Strange’s memory-erasing spell left him completely alone. He said audiences will better appreciate the story if they discover certain plot developments during the film rather than through promotional material.

Cretton also praised Tom Holland’s creative involvement, describing the actor as someone with a strong understanding of storytelling who contributed ideas throughout development. He added that Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon continue to share natural on-screen chemistry despite Peter’s altered relationship with MJ and Ned.

The filmmaker also discussed Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle, saying the Punisher serves as a thematic contrast to Peter Parker by representing the darker path the young hero could choose after enduring significant personal trauma.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, with the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film arriving in cinemas on July 31, 2026.
