Niall Horan apologises after 'honest mistake' sparks backlash from Argentine football fans

Niall Horan has apologised after facing backlash from Argentine fans over an Instagram "like" that many interpreted as supporting a post mocking Argentina following the country's World Cup final defeat to Spain.

The former One Direction star found himself at the centre of an online controversy after users noticed he had liked a carousel post titled "8 times Argentina were really nice guys during the World Cup final." The post sarcastically criticised Argentina's conduct during the final against Spain and concluded with an image referencing the long-running dispute over the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), showing a Spanish flag with the phrase, "Las Malvinas son Españolas."

The final slide drew particular criticism from Argentine fans, who viewed it as mocking a deeply sensitive national issue rather than simply poking fun at football rivalry. Screenshots of Horan's apparent "like" quickly spread across social media, prompting accusations that he had endorsed the post's message.

Horan soon addressed the controversy on X, insisting the interaction had been accidental.

"Honest mistake. Truly didn't even realise I'd liked the post and don't even remember seeing it. I have nothing but love for Argentina and all my fans there."

His response came after Argentina's official fan club for the singer publicly expressed disappointment and called for clarification. Many fans accepted Horan's explanation, while others continued to debate whether the "like" had been accidental.

The controversy followed Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Tensions surrounding the match had already been heightened after Argentina players displayed a "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" banner following their semi-final victory over England, prompting widespread discussion about political messaging during the tournament.

Despite the backlash, Horan reiterated that he harbours no ill feelings toward Argentina, a country where One Direction built one of its most passionate fan bases and where he has long enjoyed strong support throughout his solo career.
