Cole Hauser has opened up about the challenges of filming Dutton Ranch without the direct involvement of creator Taylor Sheridan.

The actor, who returns as fan-favourite character Rip Wheeler in the Yellowstone spinoff series, said the transition from the original show brought major changes for the cast and crew.

In an interview with Film Insider, Hauser explained that working without Sheridan’s presence on set was a challenge, but the team remained focused on delivering the story. He said the cast and crew “worked their asses off” while adapting to a different production environment.

Hauser first played Rip Wheeler when Yellowstone premiered in 2018, becoming one of the franchise’s most popular characters. After the original series concluded in 2024, he returned alongside Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton for Dutton Ranch, which premiered on Paramount+.

The actor, who also serves as an executive producer on the spinoff, revealed that “everything had changed” compared with Yellowstone. The new series featured different writers, directors and a new creative structure under showrunner Chad Feehan.

Despite the adjustments, Hauser said he was proud of what the team achieved and is looking forward to continuing the story in season 2. The series was officially renewed following its first season.

While Taylor Sheridan remains credited as an executive producer on Dutton Ranch, he was not heavily involved in the day-to-day production of the spinoff. The show also faced additional behind-the-scenes challenges after actor Ed Harris previously expressed frustration over his character’s limited role.

Harris confirmed he will return for season 2, with his storyline expected to expand. All episodes of Dutton Ranch are currently available to stream on Paramount+.
