Charlize Theron has found herself at the centre of online debate after making playful comments about Matt Damon while promoting Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. The actress, who portrays Calypso opposite Damon's Odysseus, praised her co star's remarkable physical transformation during a recent entertainment interview, but some viewers questioned whether the remarks crossed a line because Damon has been married to Luciana Barroso for more than two decades.

Speaking about Damon's preparation for the role, Theron recalled being impressed by the effort he put into reshaping his physique for Nolan's ambitious adaptation of the ancient Greek epic. She joked that seeing him out of costume caught her attention in an unexpected way.

"I've seen him without all of that suit on. He's incredible. Incredible," Theron said before laughing and adding that she caught herself staring at his physique and thought she probably should not have been doing so. She concluded by saying, "He looked amazing, yes."

The light hearted exchange quickly spread across social media, where reactions became divided. Some users criticised the comments, arguing that they were inappropriate given Damon's long standing marriage. Others defended Theron, describing the remarks as harmless humour between colleagues who have known each other for years and have worked together on multiple occasions.

Theron and Damon first shared the screen in the 2000 film The Legend of Bagger Vance, where they played romantic interests. More than 25 years later, they reunited in The Odyssey, one of the year's biggest releases, with Damon leading the cast as Odysseus and Theron appearing as the enchantress Calypso.

Damon's physical preparation for the film has been widely discussed throughout the promotional campaign. According to reports surrounding the production, the actor lost significant weight while training extensively for the physically demanding role. Damon has consistently explained that the transformation was never about achieving a particular appearance, but about reaching the level of conditioning required to portray the legendary Greek hero convincingly.

In interviews promoting the film, Damon said the process involved a complete lifestyle adjustment, including carefully monitoring his diet and maintaining a disciplined fitness routine every day. He explained that every decision about food and training became intentional throughout production.

The Oscar winner has also spoken candidly about how much more challenging that process has become in his 50s. During a conversation on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, Damon described getting into peak condition at this stage of his life as a full time commitment. He also revealed that removing gluten from his diet had dramatically improved how he felt physically, although he admitted giving up favourites such as bread, pasta, pizza and beer was difficult.

Despite the online criticism surrounding Theron's comments, neither actor has addressed the backlash publicly.
