'Subway Takes' creator Kareem Rahma marries Karina Muslimova in New York City

Subway Takes creator Kareem Rahma has married his longtime partner, writer and artist Karina Muslimova, in a New York City ceremony after the couple cancelled their planned wedding in Cairo because of unrest in Egypt, Vogue reports.

The couple exchanged vows on June 27 at the rooftop of the Nine Orchard hotel, surrounded by family and friends, including their daughter, Sufi, who was born in 2024 and served as flower girl during the ceremony.

Although they had once questioned whether marriage was important to them, attending friends' weddings changed their perspective.

“At the beginning of our relationship, we weren’t even sure we wanted one. We used to joke that, in a world full of husbands and wives, we’d still be calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend well into our 80s,” Muslimova said.

“But after attending the weddings of some of our closest friends, we realized that kind of genuine, shared joy can’t be replicated. There’s something powerful about bringing all the people you love together to celebrate not just us as a couple, but friendship, family, and life itself.”

The couple had originally planned to marry in Cairo, Rahma's hometown, but unrest in Egypt forced them to change their plans at short notice. They instead arranged a rooftop ceremony in Manhattan.

On the morning of the wedding, they realised they had forgotten their wedding bands and bought replacement rings from a jewellery shop in Chinatown.

“Coincidentally, the husband and wife who owned the little gold shop had also forgotten to buy rings for their wedding day, so it felt like a good omen,” Rahma said.

Following the ceremony, guests attended a brief dinner before continuing celebrations at the Italian restaurant Casino.
