Colman Domingo and Robert O’Hara developing new live-action Princess Tiana film

Colman Domingo and Robert O’Hara are reportedly in talks to write an original live-action film centred on Princess Tiana, the beloved character from Disney’s 2009 animated classic The Princess and the Frog.

According to reports, the project is being developed as a new story inspired by the animated film rather than a direct live-action remake. Domingo, a two-time Oscar nominee, is expected to co-write the screenplay with Tony-nominated playwright and director Robert O’Hara. The project is still in the early stages, with further details about deals and production plans yet to be confirmed.

The Princess and the Frog was released in 2009 and marked Disney’s final traditionally hand-drawn animated feature. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, the film follows Tiana, a New Orleans waitress in the 1920s who dreams of opening her own restaurant. Her life changes after she encounters Prince Naveen, who has been transformed into a frog through a curse.

The animated film earned $267 million worldwide and received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Animated Feature and two nominations for Randy Newman’s original songs “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans.”

The potential Princess Tiana project would join Disney’s growing lineup of live-action adaptations and spin-offs based on animated classics. Other upcoming titles include Tangled, Lilo & Stitch 2, and Gaston, a spin-off connected to Beauty and the Beast.

Domingo has recently expanded his career across film, television and theatre, earning Emmy nominations for The Four Seasons and Euphoria. O’Hara is known for his work in theatre, including the award-winning play Bootycandy.

If developed, the live-action Princess Tiana film would mark another major expansion of Disney’s popular animated universe.
