'Godzilla x Kong' star Kaylee Hottle dies aged 18 after tragic car accident

Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who won audiences over as Jia in Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has died following a car accident. She was 18.

According to reports, the fatal crash occurred in Maryland. Hottle's father, Joshua Hottle, confirmed the heartbreaking news after sharing an emotional message on social media, revealing that his daughter went into cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital.

Born into a four-generation deaf family, Hottle began acting at a young age after appearing in commercials promoting communication within the deaf community. She made her feature film debut in 2021 as Jia, the orphaned deaf girl who forms an extraordinary bond with King Kong in Godzilla vs. Kong. Her heartfelt performance earned widespread praise and made her one of the breakout stars of the MonsterVerse.

Hottle reprised the role in 2024's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with the character once again serving as the emotional centre of the story. Off screen, she became an advocate for authentic deaf representation in film, frequently speaking about the importance of casting deaf actors in deaf roles.

"Deaf people are aware of their own language and they're more familiar with the culture," Hottle said while promoting Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Her co-stars had previously praised her professionalism and talent. Rebecca Hall and Alexander Skarsgård learned American Sign Language to communicate with Hottle on set, while Skarsgård described her as remarkably confident in front of the camera despite making her film debut.

Beyond the MonsterVerse, Hottle appeared in an episode of Magnum P.I. and continued to champion greater visibility for the deaf community in Hollywood. She also attended the Texas School for the Deaf, where she was active in athletics before pursuing acting.
