Jason Bateman has shared one of the most outrageous stories from his life before sobriety, revealing that he was once arrested in Monaco after a night of heavy drinking while wearing what he described as a leopard outfit.

The actor made the candid admission during an episode of the SmartLess podcast, offering listeners a humorous but honest look back at a period of his life that he has previously acknowledged was marked by excessive alcohol use and unpredictable behaviour.

Recalling the incident, Bateman said he had spent the evening in Monaco's casinos before everything spiralled out of control.

"I was arrested in Monaco for being drunk and disorderly in a nice little leopard outfit," Bateman said, adding that he had been "fresh from the casinos, all banged up on cheap Champagne and a pocket full of casino chips."

Looking back on the bizarre episode, the Arrested Development star summed up the evening with a simple reflection, saying, "I just got rocked."

Bateman did not reveal exactly when the arrest happened, but he made clear it occurred before he committed to sobriety. The actor has spoken openly over the years about the challenges he faced earlier in his career and the personal changes that followed after he decided to stop drinking.

Earlier this year, Bateman reflected on that chapter of his life during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, admitting he was fortunate that many of his mistakes happened before smartphones and social media became part of everyday life.

He acknowledged that he escaped public scrutiny in ways that many celebrities today would not, saying he "got away with a lot" during those years, although he admitted there were several occasions when events came close to becoming much more serious.

Bateman has credited his wife, Amanda Anka, with playing a significant role in encouraging him to reassess his lifestyle. After the couple married in 2001, they had several conversations about his drinking habits because of how unpredictable he could become while intoxicated.

The actor explained that Anka never issued an ultimatum demanding immediate sobriety, but their discussions made him realise that continuing along the same path would create unnecessary strain on their relationship. He ultimately decided to stop drinking sooner than he had originally planned.

Bateman has also said that becoming a father strengthened his determination to leave that period of his life behind. He and Anka are parents to daughters Francesca and Maple, and the actor has previously explained that he wanted to resolve his personal struggles before raising children.
