ISLAMABAD: Federal Water and Power Minister Syed Naveed Qamar has said upfront tariff for wind power projects will be announced this week in order to facilitate investors and attract investment in the sector.

He said this while talking to Dong Feng Electric Corporation China Vice-President Zahu Yanchou, who called on him along with a seven-member delegation here on Tuesday.

He said the government had planned to generate 1,500 megawatts through wind power by the end of next year and implementation of projects would start after the announcement of upfront tariff. Letters of intent (LOIs) have been issued to various investors as the country has a big potential for wind power generation. Qamar sought investment in wind power, saying procedure for investors had been simplified and a project could be completed within a year after the announcement of upfront tariff. He also invited investment in hydel power.

Yanchou expressed interest in investing in wind, hydel and thermal power generation, saying it would help meet future requirements.

Dong Feng Electric is already investing in five hydel and thermal projects, of which major projects are 425MW Nandipur thermal power and 525MW Chichokimalian project. Work on both the projects will start soon.

Praising the minister for resolving pending issues related to Nandipur project, he said the company would use all its resources to complete the projects as soon as possible.

The procedure for setting up small power plants in provinces and other related issues also came up for discussion.

Qamar asked the delegation to start work early on the Nandipur and Chichokimalian projects and complete them before time as they would help ease power crisis in the country.
